How to Make the Perfect Coffee at Home Using a French Press
If you’re looking for a rich, bold, and fuss-free way to brew coffee at home, the French press is a classic that never fails. With the right technique and high-quality speciality coffee, you can create a cup that rivals your favourite café.
At The Fuelled, we believe your daily brew should be simple, satisfying, and full of flavour. This guide will walk you through exactly how to make the perfect coffee using a French press—no barista badge required.
Why Choose the French Press?
The French press (also known as a cafetière or press pot) is a timeless brew method that’s loved for its full-bodied texture and robust flavour. Unlike pour over or espresso, a French press allows the coffee grounds to steep directly in hot water, extracting more oils and natural richness from your beans.
Perfect for our coffee, this method brings out all the depth and character of your brew—whether you're chasing dark chocolate notes or fruity brightness.
What You’ll Need
To make amazing French press coffee at home, here’s what you need:
- The Fuelled speciality coffee (freshly roasted beans) we recommend our Frontier Single Origin roast
- French press (standard 350ml to 1L size)
- Grinder (burr grinder preferred) unless you buy our Ground Omni
- Kettle
- Digital scale (optional but recommended)
- Timer
- Spoon or stirrer
- Filtered water
Recommended Coffee-to-Water Ratio
Start with a 1:15 ratio for balanced strength:
Example: 30g of coffee to 450ml of water
You can tweak this to your taste, but this ratio provides a strong, full-bodied cup without over-extraction.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Brew with a French Press
1. Grind Your Beans
Grind your Fuelled coffee to a coarse consistency, similar to breadcrumbs or coarse sea salt. Fine grounds will slip through the mesh filter and make your brew muddy or bitter.
Freshly ground beans make a huge difference—grind just before brewing for the best flavour.

2. Boil and Cool Your Water
Heat your water to 92–96°C (just off the boil). If you don’t have a thermometer, boil the kettle and let it sit for 30 seconds.
3. Add Coffee to the French Press
Add your measured coffee grounds into the bottom of the French press. For a single cup, 15g of coffee to 225ml of water works well. Scale up as needed.
4. Start the Brew – Bloom
Pour in just enough hot water to saturate the grounds (about twice the weight of your coffee) and let it sit for 30 seconds. This is called the bloom—it releases gases and prepares the coffee for even extraction.
5. Add the Rest of the Water
Slowly pour the remaining hot water into the French press. Give the mixture a gentle stir to ensure all the grounds are submerged.
Place the lid on top (don’t plunge yet), and set a timer for 4 minutes.

6. Press Down Slowly
After 4 minutes, press the plunger down slowly and steadily. Don’t rush—it should take about 15 seconds to reach the bottom.

7. Serve and Enjoy Immediately
Pour your coffee into a mug or carafe right away. Don’t leave it sitting in the press, or it will continue to brew and become over-extracted and bitter.

Tips for the Best French Press Coffee
Use fresh, filtered water: Coffee is 98% water—bad water means bad coffee.
Keep your press clean: Old oils and grounds can ruin the taste.
Experiment with brew time: If your coffee is too strong or bitter, shorten the steep time to 3.5 minutes. If it’s too weak, increase to 5 minutes.
Try different Fuelled roasts: Our coffees are roasted to highlight natural flavour notes—find your favourite and match it to your preferred brew strength.
Why The Fuelled Coffee Works So Well in a French Press
French press brewing brings out the bold, rich qualities of speciality beans. Our coffee is carefully roasted to bring out full flavours, whether you're into chocolatey espresso blends or fruity single origins. With a French press, you’ll capture the natural oils, sweetness, and depth that instant coffee simply can’t offer.
Our beans also have an ideal moisture content of 10.4%, which means they extract beautifully—no sourness, no stale taste, just smooth, clean coffee from the first sip to the last.
Final Thoughts
Making the perfect French press coffee at home isn’t complicated—it just takes good beans, clean water, and a little attention to detail. Once you’ve tried it, you’ll wonder why you ever settled for burnt drip coffee or overpriced takeaways.
So grab a bag of The Fuelled coffee, heat the kettle, and start brewing the best part of your day.
